"I was working in a Local Ecumenical Project in Bracknell in 1995 and
Bob (the Methodist Minister) and I we were planning the Christmas
services. We had not found a great range of quality plays or
presentations for Christmas other than the standard Nativity play. At
first, we sat down to script a play for Christmas in a conventional
form. The ideas did not flow and we ended up with a less than convincing
script.
In an attempt to make the gospel message relevant, we transposed the
story to late 20th century London. It seemed to work. The spark came
after watching a presentation of "While shepherds watched" - a Roger
Jones' musical. What struck us particularly was the fact that social
outcasts (shepherds) were first to receive the message of the birth.
Their modern day equivalent being Cardboard City dwellers.
The whole thing took less than 10 hours to write and polish.
This modern setting of the nativity can be performed indoors
(although it can equally be adapted for outdoors performances). Our
prayer is that this presentation will challenge all who take part
(actors and the congregation) to understand the significance of the
nativity. The scenes last no more than 14 minutes, which allows you
plenty of time for the carols! Happy Christmas!"
