The Apple of His Eye

A revue.
Music & drama by members of Revelation.

A summary of the show

Duration Estimated at about one hour.
Theme The aim of this revue is to encourage everyone (the congregation and ourselves) to reflect on whether we see ourselves as God sees us. Only when we accept God's image of ourselves are we able to fulfil the role He has for us. That role is as part of His team. Put it the other way round ... To be part of God's mission team we each need to know and accept ourselves as God made us to be.
Cast Members of Revelation, as required.
Members come out the choir for each sketch.
Synopsis Song: As the deer pants for the water

The three narrators are introduced (Leader, Pushy, NotSoSure)

Sketch: The Boardroom of the Trinity
In which we catch a glimpse of how mankind was designed.

Song: How Father sees me (Precious and Chosen)
Song: I am made in the image of my Father

The narrators review the idea that we are the apple of God's eye. The question is raised: Why does this matter?

Sketch: The Turnip
In which we see that team work is more than just pulling together.

The narrators sum up that we were not made to live in isolation, but to work together. To achieve that we have to know who we are and what we are good at.
Next they discuss the words of Zechariah, that God has already set us free, and this introduces the next songs.

Song: Praise to God for freedom (unnaccompanied)
Song: How lovely on the mountain

The leader asks are we free to be the person God made us to be?

Sketch: Whose clothes are you wearing?
In which we observe people trying to be something they are not.

The narrators conclude there is only one garment we need ... the garment of Salvation.

Song: I delight greatly in the Lord (words & music by Roger Jones)

So our expectations (portrayed as inappropriate clothes) can mask our true selves, and even deceive ourselves. The narrators now try to discover how God really sees us. They conclude that the only way is to pray that God will show us, through our imaginations.
The prophet Jeremiah had such a vision of how God saw Israel.

Reading: Jeremiah 18:1-6
Song: Have thine own way Lord (verse 1)
Song: Change my heart, O God

The Leader divulges the image that she received after prayer - that of a broken & twisted pot (her image) being remoulded into a thing of beauty (God's image).

Song: I am made in the image of my Father (2 verses)
Dance: Featuring restricting ribbons
Song: Lord I know you're there

The narrators observe how each ribbon in the dance symbolises a particular restriction on ourselves - tying up our time and energy ... to the point that we stop receiving God's love.

Song: I am made in the image of my Father (3 verses)

The narrators duscuss one particular ribbon (symbolising our tendency to compare ourselves to others).

Monologue: Prodigal Son
In which we find the brother left at home, feeling jealous and cheated.

Song: Purify my heart

The narrators discuss another ribbon from the dance - that of making judgements. It can lead to futile grumbling and bitter talk. Even a vow not to copy what has been done to us may well backfire on us.

Sketch: Generations
In which each succeeding generation vows not to make the same mistake of the previous generation.

Song: I am made in the image of my Father (3 verses)

Sketch: Defaced Likeness
In which an art dealer finds there is more to a picture than there seems at first. The original can probably be restored with care & time.

The narrators observe we are like the painting, we cannot change by ourselves, to reveal the true image underneath. We need to adopt Jesus as the garment of our Salvation.

Prayer of Confession

Prayer of Absolution

The revue concludes with a musical finale...

Song: El Shaddai
Song: Jesus you are changing me
Song: I am made in the image of my Father (4 verses)

Prayer

Song: I give you all the honour
Song: And can it be?
