Names of God - Latest Progress

by Douglas Brown, Drama Co-ordinator

Drama

When we held our first NOG workshops at the end of 2001 and in February 2002, I was really worried that we would have lots of music, and very few drama pieces. Progress seemed to be surging ahead on the music, but we had no drama pieces. So (as drama members will remember) I conducted a campaign of nagging, pleading & bribing members to write, or even to suggest ideas to others who could.

I am happy to say that it has paid off. Thanks to all the contributors so far. Special thanks to Dennis, our Chairman, for proving that you can have quality as well as quantity.

At the last count the drama situation stood at...

Jehova Jireh God will provide
Genesis 22:14
One idea
Jehova M'Kaddesh God who sanctifies you
Exodus 31:13
One sketch in two unfinshed forms
Jehova Nissi God is my banner
Exodus 17:15
One sketch
Jehova Rohi God is my shepherd (I shall not want)
Psalms 23:1
Two sketches
One concept
Jehova Rophe God who heals you
Exodus 15:26
One testimony
One rap/poem (unfinished)
Jehova Shalom God is peace
Judges 6:24
One sketch
Jehova Shammo God is there
Ezekiel 48:35
One concept
Jehova Tsidkenu God is our righteousness
Jeremiah 23:5-6 ; Jeremiah 33:16
One sketch
One concept

We now have enough drama material in finshed and draft form to start putting a show together. Once the concepts are developed, we will have enough to be able to create shows to suit various different themes and objectives.

Music

Now the emphasis probably moves back to where it started - on the music. To be blunt: we need more. On behalf of the dramatists I hereby lay down a challenge to all the musicians: "beat that". Don't forget that if you cannot write musical notation, there are others who can. Seek one out & hum your tune to them. Got just an idea? Talk it over with Jacki or Paula.

Perhaps the original list of OT names was not enough to inspire a song? Here are other ideas to whet your creative whistles...

Abhir Mighty one (strong) Psalms 132:2,5 ; Isaiah 1:24 ; Isaiah 49:26 ; Isaiah 60:1
Alpha and Omega The first and last Isaiah 44:6 ; Isaiah 48:12
Attiq Yomin (aramaic) Ancient of days Daniel 7:9 ; Daniel 13 ; Daniel 22
Adonai Master, Teacher
El God the omnipotent Genesis 14:18-22 ; Genesis 16:13
Elohim Supreme God, our creator Genesis 1:1
Eloha God, who is to be worshipped Deuteronomy 32:15-17
Elyon Most high God Genesis 14:18
El Berith God of the covenant Judges 9:46
El Ghibor Mighty God Isaiah 9:6
El Olam God of everlasting time Genesis 21:33 ; Psalms 90:1-3 ; Psalms 93:2 ; Isaiah 26:4
El Roi God who opens our eyes Genesis 16:13
El Shaddai The God of 'more than enough' Genesis 17:1
Father   Numbers 1:9 ; 1Samuel 16:6 ; Exodus 4:22-23 ; 2Samuel 7:14-15 ; Psalms 2:7 ; Isaiah 63:16 ; Isaiah 64:8 ; Malachai 1:6
Kadosh Holy One Psalms 71:22 ; Isaiah 40:25 ; Isaiah 43:3 ; Isaiah 48:17
NB - Isaiah uses the expression "the Holy One of Israel" 29 times.
YHVH, YHWH, Yaweh Jehova Exodus 17:15 ; Esther
This sacred name is derived from the verb "to be", implying God is eternal and absolute (the uncaused one). YHVH is the God of Israel and the God of those who are redeemed and are thus now "in Christ".
Jehova Elyon God most high Palms 7:17 ; Palms 47:2 ; Palms 97:9
Jehova Tsabaoth God of the hosts 1Samuel 1:3
Zur God our rock Deuteronomy 32:18 ; Isaiah 30:29
